Daredevil season 1 cosplay - The Mask!

As I mentioned in my first Daredevil black suit post, the mask that I made for this cosplay is in desperate need of an upgrade!

For my original mask I used a black t-shirt (the "dangly bits" were cut from the sleeves and sewn onto the back.) As you can see, I even tied a knot in the back of the mask to complete the illusion! I wouldn't say the results are awful, but I could certainly do better.

After looking at close-ups of the mask in the show, I knew that my original version definitely had the perfect texture - and bonus, I can actually see through it! - so for version 2 I bought half a metre of 1.5 metre-wide cotton jersey (a.k.a. t-shirt fabric!)

I held the fabric in front of my face, with the bottom edge just below my nose and allowed the rest to drape over the top of my head. Then, I wrapped the sides of the fabric around my head and tied them in a knot at the back.

As you can see, the ties are wayyyy too long, so I trimmed roughly XX centimetres from each one so that when worn, they reach to the bottom of my shoulder blades (after poring over screenshots from the show, this seemed like the most accurate length.)

Another problem with the ties is that they are far too thick - 50 centimetres is definitely way too much fabric compared to the show's mask. To fix this, I spread out each tie so that the fabric was totally flat. Then, I marked a line from the bottom corner to the knot at the top and trimmed away the excess fabric.

Finally, it was time to break out the sewing machine and finish up all of those exposed edges! On the edge that sits across the nose and cheeks, I folded 1 centimetre of fabric and sewed it into place with a simple straight stitch. For the ties, I folded XX centimetres on either side and sewed them into place (and only 0.5 centimetres for the bottoms because I didn't want to reduce their length any more.)

For such a simple item, this actually took a lot more trial and error than I had expected! Compared to my first mask, though, I'm so much happier!!

Let the Devil out!
