#TBT: 'Picolo' Robin (Casual Cosplay!)

For the first #TBT of the year I thought it would be a good idea to show off my latest cosplay! I completed this back at the end of November, and it only took me 6 days to make from start to finish (many of which were spent just waiting for various pieces to arrive.) This cosplay is based on the casual Teen Titans artwork created by an awesome illustrator called Gabriel Picolo (whose Instagram I've linked so that you can check out his work!)

Overall this is a great cosplay to wear out & about and one that I can't wait to do some photoshoots with! Gabriel Picolo really hit on the perfect design here - it's a brilliantly casual, super teenagery take on the character that at first glance doesn't even look like a cosplay (making it great for wearing in everyday life) but at the same time it's still instantly recognisable as Robin.

Again, most of the photos in this post have been taken from my Instagram stories - because I'm terrible at taking WIP photos.😛 Once I start working on new projects, I'll definitely remember to take better photos specifically for the blog.

One of the many things that I love about Picolo's design is the enormous 'R' symbol! The first thing I did was sketch a template onto some thin cereal box card; it took a few attempts to nail the size of the emblem as well as the shape of the 'R', but I'm really happy with the result.

The next step: transfer my card template onto fabric using some of the spare t-shirt fabric that was leftover from my Spider-Man suit that I made last year.

It's impossible to make out here because the picture quality is awful, but the emblem is made up of 3 layers - a large circle for the base, a ring running around the edge of that and finally the 'R'. I'm terrible at sewing, so everything is just attached with fabric glue!

And now, it was time to paint the emblem! Gabriel Picolo's artwork seems to use a muted colour scheme that I just love, so I mixed a little white fabric paint into the yellow and applied it with a medium sized brush. I thought that this patchy look suited the version of the character perfectly, so I left it with just 1 coat.
Once this had dried, I covered the emblem with a clean cloth and ironed it, as per the instructions on the paint bottle, to "fix" the paint and hopefully stop it from cracking or peeling off (but only time will tell if this worked - so fingers crossed!🤞)

Jacket complete, it was time for me to work on the mask! I decided to totally split from Picolo's artwork for this, and instead go for a custom design based on something I had seen on Etsy. The first step was to make some paper templates for all of the various layers. This took some trial & error to get the proportions right and ensure that it fit my face.
Then, I transferred the templates onto thin craft foam and began to assemble them! There is some cereal box card glued to the inside of the nose  to make it rigid and help maintain its angular shape.

And here is the finished mask once it had been and shaped and sealed. The heat treated foam has a really cool texture to it that reminds me of the Titans masks, so I don't need to paint it or do anything else.

To make the mask wearable (because I'm not a fan of using spirit gum) I added a 10mm elastic strap with a buckle. This adds a really cool "tactical" look, similar to Robin's mask in Arkham Origins.

And finally, I wasn't happy with the overall look of the mask, so I made it more streamlined by trimming some foam from around the bottom. This really made all the difference in my opinion and I think that the layered eyebrows give it that really aggressive look - perfect for a character who spends his spare time hunting criminals!
