#TBT: 'Eleventh Hour' Sonic Screwdriver

Since this week has been entirely dedicated to my new Raggedy Doctor cosplay, what better way to celebrate Throwback Thursday than by looking at my sonic screwdriver build from way back in 2016 (wow - was it really that long ago?!) This is by no means a replica of the Raggedy Doctor's sonic - I just wanted something that resembled the blue prop from The Eleventh Hour, with plenty of weathering to make it looked like it had just survived a regeneration and TARDIS crash-landing.

The first couple of photos below were taken on my phone and as you can see, the quality isn't exactly great so for that I apologise. The rest, however, were taken on a digital camera so they're extra detailed! (I think you can click the images to open the full-sized versions.)

I made this by modifying a Character Options Ninth Doctor sonic (which I bought from Toys 'R' Us for £5 🤣) The first thing I did was paint the 2 activation buttons the same colour as the slider; luckily I had some "coastal blue" acrylic paint that was an almost perfect match!

To paint the body of the sonic, I removed the slider and core, then masked off everything but the part that needed to be blue. I then gave it an undercoat of grey acrylic paint (I'm sure I had a reason for this at the time - I just can't remember what it was!🤣) And finally, the blue! I remember it took me a few attempts to nail the colour - I still don't think that it's a perfect match for the original prop but with the weathering it doesn't look too bad.

And speaking of weathering, this is where the fun really began! I sanded areas of the paint to expose the bare plastic, rubbed some watered down black acrylic paint into the crackles and dry-brushed some silver paint onto the body to make it look like the bare metal had been exposed. I also sanded the rest of the sonic to make all of the plastic look scratched.

Even all these years later, I think this little prop holds up really well! I'd only been prop building for about a year when I made this, and I normally cringe when I look back at my early projects because of how bad they look compared to what I can do now! 🤣

As it stands though, this is going to make the perfect accessory for my Raggedy Doctor cosplay! Thanks for reading 😊
